The John Stashuk BC Scholarship Fund

THE JOHN STASHUK BC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

DESCRIPTION

This Fund was created at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, by means of a transfer of funds from the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies (CFUS) to the University of Victoria Foundation in order to support Ukrainian studies at the post-secondary level in British Columbia.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Fund is to grant one or more scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing Ukraine-related courses at the University of Victoria.

AWARD

In general, the number of scholarship(s) and their respective values will be determined and awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, upon recommendation of the Chair of the Germanic and Slavic Studies Department.

WHO QUALIFIES TO BENEFIT

The scholarship(s) will be awarded annually to a student(s) enrolled in a course on Modern Ukraine, or other Ukraine-related courses, in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Victoria, on the basis of scholastic achievement.

Should circumstances change in the organization of Ukraine-related courses at the University, the scholarship could be made available to a student enrolled in courses on Ukrainian topics offered in other Faculties. The management of the scholarship would change accordingly.

In any year where there are no appropriate candidates for the scholarship, the award budget from the Fund may be used to supplement the research, conference, or library acquisition program with respect to Ukrainian studies within the Faculty of Humanities, specifically the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, or if appropriate, any other Faculty at the University of Victoria.

ADMINISTRATION

The investment, management and expenditure of the Fund shall be in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures.

The scholarship will be administered in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures on student awards.

The University will inform CFUS should changes in the academic programs or operations of the University render it impossible to fulfill the purposes of the Fund (for example, should courses in Ukrainian studies cease at the University).  The University will consult with CFUS to ascertain to what other purposes the income from the Fund might be allocated.
